LUQUILLO BEACH & TOWN - 'NEAREST BEACH TO EL YUNQUE'

 


Luquillo's' greatest assets are its' varied, beautiful beaches and its' easy access to San Juan and the rainforest. Balneario Luquillo is a calm crescent shaped beach lined with coconut trees. Playa Azul beach has a small surf, perfect for body surfing. The 'point' is protected and offers good snorkeling (sometimes in the winter there is too much current) and 'La Pared' often offers good surfing waves. (Medium range). 'La Selva' surfers beach is just east of Luquillo.

If you want delicious food, the place to eat is the NEW Kiosk # "21". Recently moved here from their restaurant in the town of Aibonito. Try the churrasco, delicious! best I've eaten, fantastic salads too. . . check out the solid mahagony table tops!

Within one block of the Luquillo Plaza is 'La Pared' a surfing beach. One block the other way will take you to the 'La Selva Surf Shop' There are many places to eat in Luquillo. Since Luquillo is a 'resort' town for locals as well, there are many short term apartment rentals in the condominiums, especially Playa Azul . . The famous Balneario Luquillo is a fair walk from this plaza. Balneario Luquillo ( public beach) is probably the most famous beach in Puerto Rico, certainly the most visited by tourism. Located about 15 miles or 45 minutes east of San Juan and close to the entrance to the El Yunque rainforest. There are many activities in the nearby Fajardo area also. NEW! 'PASTA Y PUEBLO' A small restaurant a few feet in from the large metal sculpture by the beach is "Pasta y Pueblo" - a great place to eat! In the 'Balneario': Inside the gates of the 'public' beach, long coconut lined calm crescent beach with facilities. One of the two food kiosks there is called 'Sabor Playero' and run by Migdalia & George. They serve a daily $5. hot lunch, which is a great deal. Also fried food and a good mofongo.

In Town:

Recently opened 'Pasta y Pueblo'. Opens 5 PM - Very Popular, you may need reservations!

The 'Brass Cactus' is a sports bar with nice American style food. Something for everyone.. Salads to baby back ribs. 'Always OPEN'

'Flamboyant Corner Hang Out and bar, serves breakfast, sandwiches, pool tables.

'Guavas' is the priciest place in town, terrific views overlooking the water, go for the sunset! Saturday nights music and party fills the street.

Kings Seafood has good, reasonable seafood.

The Bakery ( Panaderia) on the square serves a reasonable breakfast, luncheon specials and sandwiches. Try the 'quesitos' a favorite local pastry.

Across from the La Selva Surf Shop is a little 'hole in the wall' Restaurant serving luncheon specials. Ernestinas Place has good food and AC.

Eric's Gyros is at the corner, just before the underpass on the road out of Luquillo going east. Really, really good sandwiches and gyros! Lunches only.

Towards Fajardo:

'El Meson' is the place to eat if you want good food. Reasonably priced, a facility that is really clean and sanitary! They do an excellent job, located in the same building as Baskin Robbins and Dunkin Donuts. ( Beefsteak smothered in onions with the BEST fries in town and a salad for $6.) Their speciality is sandwiches of all varieties and breakfast anytime. Very popular with locals, stands out for food quality and cleanliness.

'Lolitas Mexican Restaurant' good family Mexican Restaurant, local favorite. Large variety of Mexican food, well run.

Road # 987:

Las Olas is a tapas bar on the water, lovely view of the sea and marinas. Road # 987

'Calizo' is also a fine restaurant on #987. Fine dining.. . These two restaurants are just before you get to Seven Seas beach and Las Croabas fishing village where the boats to Icacos leave in the daytime and the biobay kayak trips leave at night.

Right at Las Croabas is El Bohio Restaurant, a good choice for fresh lobster and other local food.

Towards El Yunque:

'Las Vegas" serves excellent fine cuisine Thursdays through Sunday on rd # 191. Excellent dining. OPEN Thursday through Sunday only.

Help protect our reefs, use 'rash guards'! Rash guards are the long sleeve tight shirts that surfers wear and they offer the best UV protection. Use waterproof sun block, not sprays.
