EL YUNQUE RAINFOREST WATERFALL PUERTO RICO
![]() |
This lovely little waterfall is one of a series of 3, one above the other, located off rd # 191 on the way up the mountain. Great walking trails into the rainforest from various spots along road #191. Ferns and epiphytes cling to every available growing space imginable. With this much rain they don't need much soil. You can stay a few miles away from here. see the rainforest lodging page. Videos below were taken going road # 191 on the north side of the rainforest, stopping at various locations. In the interview with some local visitors on "La Coca Falls' I ask if they think that their ancestors were Taino and they answer: "YES , of course, isn't it obvious! " I ask them if they know what the Tainos' thought about this mountain and their answer was that there was a god, 'Yuquiyu' or 'Yokahu' who reigned over the peoples of 'Borinken' ( Puerto Rico now) at the top.

Below: "Salto Dona Juana' (Dona Juana's Leap). Waterfall off the side of the road down to Jayuya from the 'Toro Negro Forest Reserve'. Toro Negro is the highest Forest Reserve in Puerto Rico and has the two highest fresh water lakes which are well stocked for fly-fishing (bass). The campground , if minimal, is very nice, quite chilly in the clouds! (Need prior reservations). Nearby in Jayuya is the Parador Hacienda Gripinas, a restored coffee plantation. Excellent restaurant if this parador is still open. More about the Jayuya area. Jayuya is coffee country. |
